Today marks the launch of the Universities UK “100 Faces Campaign,” celebrating first-generation students and graduates whose parents or caregivers did not attend university, and highlighting the significant impact they have made on society.
James is honored to be featured among influential figures such as Beth Mead, Rav Matharu, Sara Berkai, Christopher Pissarides, Marek Reichman, Benjamin Alexander, and Justine Greening.
This campaign sheds light on the experiences of first-generation graduates by exploring their backgrounds, achievements, and the transformative role university education played in their lives.
Research reveals that 73% of first-generation graduates felt their degree gave them the confidence to apply for jobs without experiencing imposter syndrome. Additionally, 41% believe they would not have been able to afford university without financial support.
Universities UK is advocating for critical reforms, urging the UK Government to:
• Reinstate maintenance grants in England for students who need them most, ensuring equal opportunities for future generations.
• Adjust maintenance loans to reflect actual inflation rates and revise the household income threshold, which has remained unchanged since 2008.
